Why plants matter in Railborn
The Steam page makes farming one of the four pillars of the game: "Find rare plants to cultivate on your farms". Your train is not just a vehicle, it is a greenhouse on rails. The world outside is dying, and part of your long-term goal is rebuilding pieces of it on board, one planted species at a time. That framing makes plants the emotional core of the loop: you are not only surviving, you are restoring something.
What official media has shown
Official screenshots and the reveal trailer show several concrete pieces of the farming system. A dedicated greenhouse railcar with a glass roof and hanging planters sits at the center of the train. Outdoors-style planter boxes hold young crops with fruit visible at harvest stage. A watering can interaction appears with an on-screen prompt, and a water meter tracks how much each planter box has received, displayed as a fraction out of five.
The farming railcar can even travel submerged: one official screenshot shows a glass-roofed farm car underwater, with fish swimming past the roof and aquatic storage tanks inside. Farms are not decorative, they ride with you through every biome.
Watering and care
The clearest confirmed interaction is soil watering: aim at a planter box, hold a water canister, and press the interact key to pour. The planter box shows its own water level, and crops stop progressing when it runs dry. Expect a water logistics loop between your water storage, your farming car and the world outside, though the exact production numbers have not been published.
Biomes and ecosystem rebuilding
Official copy also mentions recreating natural environments on your train. Different biomes in the world, from red canyons to snowfields to coastlines, host different flora, and the farming system is how you carry those biomes with you. Whether planted species require biome-specific conditions has not been confirmed.
What is not confirmed yet
- The total number of plant species and their names beyond what appears in official media.
- Growth timers, yield amounts and any fertilizer mechanics.
- Whether plants affect survival stats directly or feed into other production chains.
