Railborn Train Building
Train building is the backbone of Railborn. You start with a single railcar and grow it piece by piece into a multi-floor moving base, adding modules for farming, storage, power and living space as you salvage materials from the world.

From one railcar to a rolling fortress
The official description is explicit: "build your train piece by piece". You begin with a single self-propelled railcar on an endless rail network. Every plate, wall and module you add extends that starting point, and because the train is your home, every expansion changes how you survive, not just how you look.
Railcars, bogies and drivetrain
Official screenshots show the smallest buildable units: wheeled bogies that sit directly on the track, ready to receive a deck. That confirms building happens at the vehicle level first. You lay the running gear, then attach decks and structures on top. A braking interaction is visible in official media, so the assembled train is driven, not just pushed.
Floors and vertical expansion
Railborn lets you build upward. The Early Access feature list says you add floors and place modules, and official screenshots show at least two stacked levels with external stairs and railings. Vertical space matters because different systems want different homes: glass-roofed farm cars need sunlight, engines and storage favor lower decks.
Modules seen in official media
- Farm cars: glass roofs, planter boxes and hanging greenery for rare plants.
- Storage crates: orange hard-case containers shown on decks and interiors.
- Workbenches and machinery: processing stations with moving parts, shown both outdoors and inside.
- Living quarters: tents, beds, lamps and seating that make the train a home.
Building while the world is hostile
The world outside is described as hostile, and official media shows ruined stations, broken bridges and overgrown infrastructure. Expansion is a risk decision: every stop to salvage and build is time spent outside your moving safety zone. How danger scales with train size has not been confirmed.
What is not confirmed yet
- The full module catalog, their costs and unlock order.
- Train length limits, weight effects on speed, and derailment rules.
- Whether structures can be rearranged freely or only dismantled and rebuilt.
Building feeds directly into power and water management, and farms are the module type the community asks about most. The beginner guide walks through your first expansions step by step.
